    Re-building ribs

    I just got a 1960 Rhodes 19.

Fiberglass hull with wooden ribs. The ribs also support the keel (about 400#).

I have read that some others have used Core cell foam with a glass covering to replace the ribs. Other have used white oak, western red cedar and glass marine plywood.

I would think the core cell would be the best option and maybe red cedar as a more cost effective option.

I think that with either of these options I would need to use an aluminum plate across the ribs (3) that support the keel, where the bolts go thru the ribs??

Any thoughts on the structural end of things would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ed

The Core Cell and DB 1208 tape would be my recommendation for the ribs. Cedar would also work more difficult to work with. We did a rebuild on an R Boat several years ago and ran several layers of uni glass about a foot up either side of the keel, then bolted it thru the knees. You might try this, but replace the rib core with Oak over the keel as the foam will not take the compression load. I would not recommend an Aluminum plate over the ribs.

    So your saying:

Use wood for the 3 ribs that support the keel? Would Red cedar be OK, it is more available here.

Then use the core cell and tape for the other ribs?

Hard wood would be better than a soft wood such as cedar as there is a lot of compression load from the keel bolts. You would only need to use this in the bilge area.
