canoe dolly

I have a 16ft. Peterbourgh canoe that was built in the late 20's.It weights about 95 lbs. dry and picks up another 30 or so wet.It's a dream to paddle but a brute carry.Last year on vacation I saw a guy with a set of dolly wheels under one end of his canoe and was pulling is along by the other end.I did'nt get a chance to talk to him,and have not been able to find any.Does anyone know what i'm talking about and where I could find one? I live in eastern ontario. Thanks.

I seem to remember seeing somthing like that in the classified section of Wood Boat magazine. Or you could make your own with a couple off bicycle wheels ,an axle and a sling.

I did a search on Google for >canoe cart, dolly< and came up with a gazillion different places that sell them. I have seen some homemade ones on the net but haven't been able to track them down.

I built a dolly for my 15 ft canoe that works well, it also works with my 10 ft kayak. I cut a piece of 3/8 ply about 2 ft square and cut out a hole shaped to fit the boat, about a couple of feet from one end. On the bottom I attached two lawn motor replacement wheel, which are only a few dollars, using the replacement stud axles which were also available from the local farmer's cooperative store; a lot of hardware stores carry these.

The device slips over the end of the canoe and is held in place by a bungy cord between its top edge and the nearest seat.

It has been working great for several years now. I modified the hole so it also accepts my kayak.

A profiler tool is useful for this job; it looks like a steel comb with movable teeth and is available for a few dollars from virtually any hardware store.
